“Lifestyle” can seem like a humdrum term, not taken too seriously or examined in depth. However, it holds great significance, everybody has a lifestyle, whether it is intentional or not. Earlier this week I was listening to a *podcast featuring Dr. Sarah Villafranco, who brought its significance sharply into focus. She stated, “Our health is created or destroyed by our daily habits.” This statement holds undeniable truth. So, if prompted to reflect, “Did your lifestyle foster or hinder your health today?” What would your answer be?
Which choices and activities qualify as lifestyle habits? The short answer: Everything. Every choice you make, every action you take, holds the power to shape your health and well-being. From the moment you wake to the moment you sleep. It’s what you put in your body, on your body, how you stress your body, and how you move your body. Your daily lifestyle is the canvas upon which your health is painted.
Let us explore how you have the agency to either create or destroy your health. Consider the food you consume – each meal is an opportunity to nourish your body with wholesome ingredients or inundate it with processed food. Likewise, your decision to engage in physical activity or lead a sedentary existence directly influences your physical fitness and resilience to disease. Even seemingly trivial choices, such as your sleep habits, stress management techniques, and the products you use daily play a significant role in shaping your overall health.
At the heart of a health-conscious lifestyle lie the building blocks of vitality. Nutrition serves as the cornerstone, with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins providing the essential nutrients our bodies crave. Regular exercise strengthens muscles, improves cardiovascular health, and boosts mood by releasing endorphins – the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Adequate sleep is equally crucial, allowing the body to repair and rejuvenate, while effective stress management techniques promote mental well-being and resilience. Opting for natural, non-toxic products can help maintain the skin’s barrier function, and prevent exposure to harmful chemicals.
Conversely, destructive lifestyle habits pose a grave threat to your health and wellbeing. Consumption of processed foods high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats can pave the way for obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Sedentary behavior not only weakens muscles and bones but also increases the risk of chronic conditions such as hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Poor sleep quality and chronic stress, meanwhile, wreak havoc on your immune system, leaving you vulnerable to illness and mental health disorders.The products you use on your skin and in your environment can introduce harmful substances into your body that may disrupt hormonal balance, cause skin irritation, or even contribute to long-term health issues.
The power to create or destroy health with your lifestyle choices is both a privilege and a responsibility. Every day presents you with countless opportunities to foster wellness. By simply being aware of the impact your habits have you are empowered to make informed decisions that align with your health goals. Small changes, implemented consistently over time, can yield profound results. You, and only you, hold the power when it comes to healthy lifestyle choices!

Each morning, take inventory of the choices you’ll face and set an intention to focus on one aspect of health for the day—nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress resilience, or detoxifying your products. How can you be 1% better than you were yesterday? At day’s end, reflect on your choices, celebrating small victories and noting areas for improvement. Design new daily habits that create health. Your future self will thank you for it.
