One of the most important parts of the work I do as an integrative nutrition health coach and clinical herbalist is learning to deeply listen to the body. When I sit with a client, I’m not just looking at symptoms in isolation—I’m looking for patterns. I ask questions that help uncover root causes so we can better understand what the body is trying to communicate and gently guide it back toward balance.
In addition to clinical listening and case history, I also use blood work as a supportive tool in this process.
I do not diagnose disease. Instead, I look at labs through a functional lens—meaning I’m less focused on whether someone falls inside or outside a standard reference range, and more interested in whether their body is thriving. Functional ranges often reflect optimal wellness, energy, and resilience, rather than simply “absence of disease.”
What I often find is that standard blood work panels leave out important pieces of the story. That’s why I frequently recommend additional testing depending on the individual. When we zoom out and look at patterns instead of isolated numbers, the body becomes much easier to understand.
Finding the Right Labs (Without Overwhelm)
There are many ways to access affordable functional lab testing. One option is:
That said, labs are only one piece of the puzzle. Interpretation is where the real insight happens. Blood work without context can be confusing—or even misleading—if it’s not viewed through a whole-body lens.
Here are a few of the labs I commonly look at in practice:
Homocysteine
- This marker can offer insight into inflammation, methylation pathways, B-vitamin status, detoxification capacity, and nervous system stress. Elevated levels often suggest that the body may be under biochemical or oxidative strain.
Iron and Ferritin
Iron status is one of the most commonly imbalanced patterns I see. Levels can be either too low or too high depending on the individual.
Low iron may be connected to:
- digestive dysfunction
- chronic stress
- inflammation
- heavy or prolonged bleeding
- poor absorption or intake
Elevated ferritin, on the other hand, can sometimes reflect inflammation, infection, or metabolic stress rather than simply “too much iron.”
Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays a critical role in immune regulation, mood stability, bone health, inflammation balance, and hormone function.
Hormones are also required to activate and utilize vitamin D effectively, which is why I often see vitamin D imbalance alongside hormonal dysregulation.
From a functional perspective, I typically like to see levels around 40 ng/mL or higher, depending on the individual’s context.
Complete Thyroid Panels
Many people are only given a TSH or basic T4 test, which does not always reflect the full thyroid picture.
A more complete functional approach may include:
- Free T3
- Free T4
- Reverse T3
- Thyroid antibodies (TPO, TG)
- Total T3/T4
Thyroid function does not exist in isolation. It is influenced by digestion, stress load, sleep quality, nutrient status, liver function, and nervous system regulation.
Things like chronic stress, mouth breathing, sleep apnea, inflammation, and blood sugar dysregulation can all contribute to thyroid imbalance over time.
The Body Is Always Communicating
One of the most important truths in this work is this:
The body is always communicating—but it rarely starts by screaming.
It whispers first.
Fatigue. Digestive changes. Anxiety. Sleep disruption. Skin shifts. Cycle changes. Temperature sensitivity. These are often early signals that something deeper is asking for attention.
And healing is rarely as simple as “taking more supplements.”
Sometimes the body needs nourishment.
Sometimes it needs nervous system regulation.
Sometimes it needs minerals, sleep repair, blood sugar stability, digestive support, or emotional safety.
The key is not doing more—it is doing what is actually supportive.
Herbs as Support: A Note on Ashwagandha and Thyroid Health
In my work, I also use herbs thoughtfully and individually—not as one-size-fits-all solutions.
For example, ashwagandha can be a supportive herb for some individuals with hypothyroid patterns. It may help with stress resilience, sleep quality, and overall nervous system regulation.
However, it is not appropriate for everyone.
Ashwagandha may not be well tolerated in individuals who:
- are sensitive to nightshade (Solanaceae) family plants
- experience excess internal heat patterns (such as reflux or agitation)
- feel overstimulated by warming herbs
This is why individualized assessment matters. The same herb that supports one person may feel disruptive to another.
A Personalized Path Forward
This is the foundation of my work inside the Root 2 Rise Reset Program—a 3–6 month personalized journey for post-menopausal women who want to understand their bodies more deeply and restore balance from the inside out.
Inside the program, we work together to:
- interpret blood work through a functional lens
- identify root patterns behind symptoms
- create customized herbal and nutritional support
- build a nervous system regulation practice
- improve digestion, sleep, and energy
- develop sustainable daily wellness habits
It is not about quick fixes. It is about helping the body return to its natural state of balance.
We begin with a free “Let’s Talk” call to explore whether the program is the right fit.
From there, we move into a detailed intake process that looks at all body systems so support can be truly personalized.
If you are looking for natural supports, I would love to hear your story. You can book a free “Let’s Talk” call or simply sign up to receive health and wellness updates.
