How do I protect my doula business?

Having general & professional liability insurance designed specifically for doulas is the first step to protecting your doula business. You also want to make sure to properly document any client intake process along with any communications you have with your clients. Keep good notes! Liability waivers & release forms are also an absolute must when starting to work with a client. Get a waiver signed BEFORE starting any work with your new client.

Start out on the right foot! Be clear about your doula services. Make sure your client understands what you do and do not do as a doula. Include this in your release and wavier forms, and update those forms any time you make a change to your business.

Joining Alternative Balance is simple, reliable, affordable, and instant!

Doula insurance is also called malpractice insurance for doulas or errors and omissions insurance, so you may have heard those terms before.

Your policy will include general & professional liability, participant accident, damage to premises rented, and much more. Sexual Abuse Liability is also available as an optional coverage. To see a list of coverage provided with your insurance policy, please see our Coverages page.

Products-Completed Operations Aggregate

The maximum amount your policy will pay in a 12-month period for bodily injury and property damage claims that result from the products you use to perform your services.  However, it does not cover products that are sold or distributed.

Medical Expenses

Coverage that reimburses others, without regard to the insured’s liability, for medical or funeral expenses incurred by such persons as a result of bodily injury or death sustained by accident under the conditions specified in the policy. This does not apply to the named insured or their employees.

Personal & Advertising Injury

The amount that your policy will pay for claims arising out of one or more of the following offenses:

  • False Arrest, detention or imprisonment

Defense Costs

Defense Costs coverage is included in your general & professional liability insurance coverage limits. Defense Costs refers to all the costs of defending against a lawsuit. This is often the most important aspect of protecting you if you are being held liable for bodily injury or property damage resulting from your services.
