Summer is here, and it’s a good time to enjoy the outdoors, get more fit and eat healthy. As a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach, I have the following suggestions on Lifestyle Fitness.
Fitness Consistency by Doing What You Like
Play your favorite sports or take the fitness classes you like most, because you will keep doing it. When you try something new that’s great but if you don’t like it, you are more likely to quit. I always suggest people begin with their favorite activities and build onto them rather than trade them for something entirely new.
Inner Tone
Whether playing tennis/golf or alternating your jogging/walking speeds and distance each will vary your heart rate which is exercise on the inside. Inner tone through a healthy flow of oxygen improves your circulation and not only fuels your muscles but also aids in recovery time.
Strength Training
Working with weights will help strengthen your bones, give you better balance, and provide functional, everyday fitness. Treating your joints with care in strength training might comprise leg extensions and stopping at the position right before locking out the knees so as to make the muscles surrounding the joint stronger. Besides bone density and muscle size, tone and fat reduction also may occur through proper training and diet considerations.
Lifestyle Nutrition
Circling back to doing your favorite sports, I believe including clients’ favorite food is essential in lifestyle happiness. The challenge is recognizing numerous options for some (not all) meals and snacks, as well as considering moderation of food that is less beneficial in smaller amounts. An example of this might be chocolate. No, it is not at all bad for you! Chocolate provides energy and plenty of healthy antioxidants. But in excess it will raise your blood sugar and give you highs and lows in vitality. In the long run, eating healthier food and practical portions not only gives you energy, but also helps to strengthen and sculpt your body.
General Nutrition Tips
I suggest drinking 6-10 glasses of water daily, and eating lots of colorful fruit and vegetables, as each color provides different vitamins. The US My Plate suggests 30 percent grains, 30 percent vegetables, 20 percent fruits and 20 percent protein plus a cup of dairy daily. We are not machines, so this is not an exact science since when you exercise more you may need more of certain elements like protein. Nonetheless, these percentages are good to keep in mind, along with colorful plates of food.
I hope some of these ideas will help you on your way to a healthy lifestyle of fitness and nutrition.
